One message stood out at JIMTOF 2026:
machine tool competitiveness will increasingly depend on how well equipment,
automation, and digital technologies work together. Manufacturers are looking
beyond individual machine performance to solutions that can improve
productivity and respond to changing production needs. These shifts matter to
TMTS because they are reshaping what manufacturers expect from machine tools
and production solutions.
The 33rd Japan International Machine Tool
Fair (JIMTOF 2026) opened in Tokyo on October 26, bringing together 1,134
exhibitors from 22 countries and regions, with 4,422 booths. AI, robotics, and
digital technologies featured prominently, reflecting the industry’s focus on
optimizing entire production processes.
Rising material costs, labor shortages,
and supply chain disruptions are pushing manufacturers to improve efficiency
and make production more flexible. At JIMTOF, the emphasis on AI and robotics
showed how manufacturers are exploring ways to connect equipment, automate
tasks, and make better use of production data.
Japan is also promoting AI Transformation
(AX) and identifying Physical AI as an important area for future development.
When combined with manufacturing expertise, operational experience, and data
from the shop floor, AI can help companies strengthen production capabilities
and address labor challenges.
For machine tool manufacturers, this
shift creates opportunities to integrate machinery, components, automation, and
digital systems into solutions that respond to customers’ production needs.
The rapid expansion
of AI is driving investment in semiconductors, data centers, and energy
infrastructure. This investment, in turn, is contributing to demand for
precision machining and related manufacturing equipment. This investment is
contributing to new demand for precision machining and related manufacturing
equipment.
The challenge for manufacturers is to
turn advances in digital technology into practical production capabilities.
JIMTOF’s opening ceremony also highlighted the importance of research and
development, capital investment, AX, and Physical AI. These priorities point to
a broader need for technologies that can connect digital innovation with
manufacturing on the factory floor.
JIMTOF’s program extended beyond
equipment displays. It included AI and robotics showcases, university research
presentations, machining demonstrations, and industry seminars. For the first
time, the exhibition also collaborated with Formnext on a specialized seminar,
creating an opportunity for exchange across manufacturing fields.
These activities reflect the growing role
of trade shows in knowledge sharing, talent development, and industry
collaboration. During the exhibition, TMBA Chairperson Patrick P. Chen visited
Taiwanese member companies to show support for their international
participation.
For TMTS, these global developments
reinforce the importance of connecting Taiwan’s machine tool and component
suppliers with international buyers and industry partners. By bringing together
equipment, components, and smart manufacturing capabilities, TMTS provides a
platform for the industry to explore new technologies and build connections
around the changing needs of global manufacturing.
